Judges Breed Study Group (Judges Seminar)

Wednesday June 8th - (no fee) (Time TBA)
Judges, owners and breeders are cordially invited to attend this seminar which is being facilitated by Bob Naun.

The BTCA actively encourages and supports judges' and breeders' education. The preservation of the Border Terrier as a working terrier depends on the entire fancy understanding all aspects of proper conformation. This illustrated seminar, designed to educate judges, carefully details the points of conformation which a Border Terrier needs to do its job. Here is your chance to learn the differences and commonalities between Border Terriers and other terrier breeds.

Certificate of Participation available to attending Judges. Please contact Bob Naun at 845-628-3059 or rjnaun@rcn.com to register

Silent Auction

Thursday June 9th
We Need Your Good Stuff! - Our traditional Silent Auction will take place on the night of the Awards Banquet and we need lots and lots of Border art, memorabilia, dog supplies, toys and plain old-fashioned goodies to fill up those tables.

We're also looking for "Big Ticket" items for the Not-So-Silent portion of the auction, when our presenters make fools of themselves for the sake of breed education, health or welfare. We're determined to bring in more loot than ever before for our beloved BTs. Please start collecting items to donate to the event. Nothing is too big or too small, too silly or too staid!

You can mail your donated items directly to:
Jan Moore, 610 Saffron Court, Foristell, MO 63348

OR bring your items to the Specialty but please send a description of the item and your name, address and phone number to:
Lynn Looper at 4667 Petra Mill Road, Granite Falls, NC 28630-8332
or e-mail her at llooper1@msn.com.

Money raised by the auction goes to Border Terrier special needs such as Breed Education, health issues pertinent to the breed; welfare and/or rescue. With your help and generosity we can all make sure this year's event will go down in BTCA history!

Deadline for shipped items June 01, 2005
Contact Lynn for further information llooper1@msn.com 828-396-3986.

BTCA Sponsored Health Seminar

Monday, June 6th 6:00pm
These important and timely seminars are being funded by the BTCA Health Fund and are free to Border Terrier enthusiasts.
Although there is no fee, registration is required, please use the Specialty Reservation/Order Forms in this package.

CECS/Border Terrier Cramping - A seminar by Mark Leichty DVM (Border Terrier breeder/owner), who has been coordinating research efforts on CECS for the past three years. He has been a source of information about this disorder to veterinarians and owners throughout the United States. He will be covering a wide range of all aspects of CECS. He will present some interesting new CD's, information on how we can recognize CECS, the hereditary aspect of CECS and what we as breeders can do about this disorder.

The Phenome Project - Liz Hansen, from the Animal Molecular Genetic Lab and accomplished breeder/owner/handler of Standard Schnauzers, will present information on the Phenome Project. The federally funded Canine Genome Project is near completion. The Canine Phenome Project is designed to collect and store DNA, plus detailed phenotype, or trait, information from dogs, and use this information along with the newly compiled genetic sequence information from the Genome project to identify markers for many traits of interest to dog owners, breeders, and trainers. Initially the project will target diseases of concern to fanciers.

Deadline May 12, 2005

AKC DNA & Microchip Clinic

Monday, June 6th 9:00am - 4:00pm
The requirement for permanent identification for each dog is expanding.
DNA profiles positively identify an individual dog and are used for parentage documentation. Frequently used sires, and those where frozen or shipped semen is used, require that a DNA profile is on file. We can expect in the future that DNA profiles will be required for all breeding animals. DNA profiles ensure the integrity of our pedigrees.
$35 per dog to be paid day of clinic but please use the Specialty Reservation/Order Forms in this package to ensure we have enough swabs available;

Microchip, or other permanent identification, is now required by both OFA and CERF if the dog is to be entered in the AKC database. In addition, permanent ID will be required for any Border being entered into the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) database. The Canine Health Committee of the AKC Delegate body has suggested that where a microchipped dog has a DNA profile done after the chip is inserted, the chip data be entered in the DNA database. Thus a profiled dog only needs to be scanned in order to prove it is that dog.

$25 per dog for Microchip Clinic, (includes CAR application fee)
Please use the Specialty Reservation/Order Forms in this package.

Deadline May 12, 2005

OFA Cardiac & CERF Clinics

Monday, June 6th 9:00am - 4:00pm
Don't miss this opportunity to have your dogs come closer to CHIC Certification. Please note that we require all participants in the CERF and Cardiac Clinic be permanently ID'ed.

OFA Cardiac Clinic - Dr. Debrah Fine from Columbia, MO $ 30 per dog (does not include OFA application fee - OFA offers Clinic Fees at a special price of $7.50/dog).

CERF Clinic - Dr. Ben Johnson from St. Louis, MO
$ 20 per dog (does not include CERF application fee)

The above clinics are being offered at a considerable savings.

Please use the Specialty Reservation/Order Forms in this package.

Deadline May 12, 2005.

Current requirements for CHIC Certification:
Annual CERF (to age 8); Cardiac OFA conducted by an ACVIM Accredited Cardiologist after the age of 12 months; Patella OFA conducted after the age of 12 months; Hip OFA conducted after the age of 24 months.

FREE Blood Draw for DNA

Monday, June 6th 9:00am - 4:00pm
We are very excited to announce a FREE blood draw for DNA at no cost to BTCA or the participants.

The DNA from your dog can be stored indefinitely, and that storage is also free. It will be retained for future use when it might be needed for a variety of research projects, such as finding a genetic marker for a specific disorder.

All that is needed is a copy of your dog's pedigree, his registered name and number and a sample of blood.
We are taking reservations but drop-in's are welcome. However, those with reservations for a specific time, will be moved to the head of the line.

To make your reservation, please use the Separate DNA Blood Draw Clinic form in this package.
When filling in the form, the Research Project is BORDER TERRIER. The Litter ID Code is only used if there are multiple samples tied to one prominent dog. You can use a simple call name so it is easily recognized by the U of MO. However it is not critical if this is left blank.

The blood draw will move quickly if the forms are filled out in advance.
If you have missing data needed on the forms you will be asked to fax or email the missing information to the University of Missouri when you return home.

If the dog has any health issues you would like to report, please use the reverse of the form to provide an explanation.

If you have any questions, contact Kris Blake

Deadline for Advance Registrations, June 01, 2005.

FLASH! Participant's Draw
One ticket per dog, bring five dogs and you will receive five tickets
Prizes include books as well as two of Donna Shier's lovely kangaroo leashes

Statement on Presentation of the Border Terrier
(Over Grooming and Coloring)

The Border Terrier Club of America, Inc. would like to make known its concern about and disapproval of the use of ANY kind of artificial enhancement on Border Terriers. The use of chalks, dyes, mousses, sprays, drugs, surgery or any procedure which alters mental or physical characteristics is prohibited by AKC Rules and is contrary to the essence of the Border terrier. We would like to remind everyone that the Border Terrier standard emphasizes that it is a natural, working breed and should be exhibited as such. We appeal to all breeders, owners, handlers, fanciers and approved judges to uphold and protect the integrity of the breed.
Thank you for your support.
